EV YU
EV YU is a Manila based visual artist. She started self publishing comics and zines which allowed further exploration to print making. This also acts as primer to create more experimental narratives in her watercolor works.
Just yesterday Odile_tv got to chattiing with our featured artist on:
- the seriousness of art
- multiple identities (online & offline)
- & trivial & non-trivial matters [depending on your perspective in life].
WHERE WERE YOU BORN? Manila
WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU LIVED YOUR LIFE? I live near a field right now.
AT WHAT AGE DID YOU START TAKING ART SERIOUSLY? DO YOU TAKE ART SERIOUSLY? As I get older, the seriouser I get. It’s a gradual thing to me. Art starts with appreciation that affects how I perceive and learn things. Being a valuable mode of communication - it is a practice of freedom and restraint too.
DO YOU HAVE MULTIPLE ONLINE IDENTITIES? If yes what are they? I think they all fall under a subtle show off persona haha
WHAT IS YOUR OFFLINE IDENTITY? DO YOU ALSO HAVE MANY? Just one. A very slow person with many roles.
WHAT'S YOUR EVERYDAY CARRY? LIKE YOU CAN'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM. 2 Liters of water
WHAT’S YOUR PREFERRED MODE OF RELAXATION? Going to the surplus wearing crocs.
WHO IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL INDIVIDUAL IN YOUR DEVELOPMENT? My parents (and pets because i’m an only child)
Inspired by the nature of graphic design and duplication, EV YU's choice of imagery are based on tweaked comic panel layouts. Each work ruminates on the dialectics of the real and virtual through exaggeration of form and blurring of narratives. How the work is perceived matters as well. Identifiable images reveal a commentary in its subtleties. It can be viscerally absorbed like ambient sound.
